  1. 1Verse 1

    عَبَسَ وَتَوَلَّىٰٓ

    AAabasa watawalla

    The Prophet frowned and turned away

  2. 2Verse 2

    أَن جَآءَهُ ٱلۡأَعۡمَىٰ

    An jaahu alaAAma

    Because there came to him the blind man, [interrupting]

  3. 3Verse 3

    وَمَا يُدۡرِيكَ لَعَلَّهُۥ يَزَّكَّىٰٓ

    Wama yudreeka laAAallahu yazzakka

    But what would make you perceive, [O Muhammad], that perhaps he might be purified

  4. 4Verse 4

    أَوۡ يَذَّكَّرُ فَتَنفَعَهُ ٱلذِّكۡرَىٰٓ

    Aw yaththakkaru fatanfaAAahu alththikra

    Or be reminded and the remembrance would benefit him

  5. 5Verse 5

    أَمَّا مَنِ ٱسۡتَغۡنَىٰ

    Amma mani istaghna

    As for he who thinks himself without need

  6. 6Verse 6

    فَأَنتَ لَهُۥ تَصَدَّىٰ

    Faanta lahu tasadda

    To him you give attention

  7. 7Verse 7

    وَمَا عَلَيۡكَ أَلَّا يَزَّكَّىٰ

    Wama AAalayka alla yazzakka

    And not upon you [is any blame] if he will not be purified

  8. 8Verse 8

    وَأَمَّا مَن جَآءَكَ يَسۡعَىٰ

    Waamma man jaaka yasAAa

    But as for he who came to you striving [for knowledge]

  9. 9Verse 9

    وَهُوَ يَخۡشَىٰ

    Wahuwa yakhsha

    While he fears [Allah]

  10. 10Verse 10

    فَأَنتَ عَنۡهُ تَلَهَّىٰ

    Faanta AAanhu talahha

    From him you are distracted

  11. 11Verse 11

    كَلَّآ إِنَّهَا تَذۡكِرَةٞ

    Kalla innaha tathkiratun

    No! Indeed, these verses are a reminder

  12. 12Verse 12

    فَمَن شَآءَ ذَكَرَهُۥ

    Faman shaa thakarahu

    So whoever wills may remember it

  13. 13Verse 13

    فِي صُحُفٖ مُّكَرَّمَةٖ

    Fee suhufin mukarramatin

    [It is recorded] in honored sheets

  14. 14Verse 14

    مَّرۡفُوعَةٖ مُّطَهَّرَةِۭ

    MarfooAAatin mutahharatin

    Exalted and purified

  15. 15Verse 15

    بِأَيۡدِي سَفَرَةٖ

    Biaydee safaratin

    [Carried] by the hands of messenger-angels

  16. 16Verse 16

    كِرَامِۭ بَرَرَةٖ

    Kiramin bararatin

    Noble and dutiful

  17. 17Verse 17

    قُتِلَ ٱلۡإِنسَٰنُ مَآ أَكۡفَرَهُۥ

    Qutila alinsanu ma akfarahu

    Cursed is man; how disbelieving is he

  18. 18Verse 18

    مِنۡ أَيِّ شَيۡءٍ خَلَقَهُۥ

    Min ayyi shayin khalaqahu

    From what substance did He create him

  19. 19Verse 19

    مِن نُّطۡفَةٍ خَلَقَهُۥ فَقَدَّرَهُۥ

    Min nutfatin khalaqahu faqaddarahu

    From a sperm-drop He created him and destined for him

  20. 20Verse 20

    ثُمَّ ٱلسَّبِيلَ يَسَّرَهُۥ

    Thumma alssabeela yassarahu

    Then He eased the way for him

  21. 21Verse 21

    ثُمَّ أَمَاتَهُۥ فَأَقۡبَرَهُۥ

    Thumma amatahu faaqbarahu

    Then He causes his death and provides a grave for him

  22. 22Verse 22

    ثُمَّ إِذَا شَآءَ أَنشَرَهُۥ

    Thumma itha shaa ansharahu

    Then when He wills, He will resurrect him

  23. 23Verse 23

    كَلَّا لَمَّا يَقۡضِ مَآ أَمَرَهُۥ

    Kalla lamma yaqdi ma amarahu

    No! Man has not yet accomplished what He commanded him

  24. 24Verse 24

    فَلۡيَنظُرِ ٱلۡإِنسَٰنُ إِلَىٰ طَعَامِهِۦٓ

    Falyanthuri alinsanu ila taAAamihi

    Then let mankind look at his food

  25. 25Verse 25

    أَنَّا صَبَبۡنَا ٱلۡمَآءَ صَبّٗا

    Anna sababna almaa sabban

    How We poured down water in torrents

  26. 26Verse 26

    ثُمَّ شَقَقۡنَا ٱلۡأَرۡضَ شَقّٗا

    Thumma shaqaqna alarda shaqqan

    Then We broke open the earth, splitting [it with sprouts]

  27. 27Verse 27

    فَأَنۢبَتۡنَا فِيهَا حَبّٗا

    Faanbatna feeha habban

    And caused to grow within it grain

  28. 28Verse 28

    وَعِنَبٗا وَقَضۡبٗا

    WaAAinaban waqadban

    And grapes and herbage

  29. 29Verse 29

    وَزَيۡتُونٗا وَنَخۡلٗا

    Wazaytoonan wanakhlan

    And olive and palm trees

  30. 30Verse 30

    وَحَدَآئِقَ غُلۡبٗا

    Wahadaiqa ghulban

    And gardens of dense shrubbery

  31. 31Verse 31

    وَفَٰكِهَةٗ وَأَبّٗا

    Wafakihatan waabban

    And fruit and grass

  32. 32Verse 32

    مَّتَٰعٗا لَّكُمۡ وَلِأَنۡعَٰمِكُمۡ

    MataAAan lakum walianAAamikum

    [As] enjoyment for you and your grazing livestock

  33. 33Verse 33

    فَإِذَا جَآءَتِ ٱلصَّآخَّةُ

    Faitha jaati alssakhkhatu

    But when there comes the Deafening Blast

  34. 34Verse 34

    يَوۡمَ يَفِرُّ ٱلۡمَرۡءُ مِنۡ أَخِيهِ

    Yawma yafirru almaro min akheehi

    On the Day a man will flee from his brother

  35. 35Verse 35

    وَأُمِّهِۦ وَأَبِيهِ

    Waommihi waabeehi

    And his mother and his father

  36. 36Verse 36

    وَصَٰحِبَتِهِۦ وَبَنِيهِ

    Wasahibatihi wabaneehi

    And his wife and his children

  37. 37Verse 37

    لِكُلِّ ٱمۡرِيٕٖ مِّنۡهُمۡ يَوۡمَئِذٖ شَأۡنٞ يُغۡنِيهِ

    Likulli imriin minhum yawmaithin shanun yughneehi

    For every man, that Day, will be a matter adequate for him

  38. 38Verse 38

    وُجُوهٞ يَوۡمَئِذٖ مُّسۡفِرَةٞ

    Wujoohun yawmaithin musfiratun

    [Some] faces, that Day, will be bright

  39. 39Verse 39

    ضَاحِكَةٞ مُّسۡتَبۡشِرَةٞ

    Dahikatun mustabshiratun

    Laughing, rejoicing at good news

  40. 40Verse 40

    وَوُجُوهٞ يَوۡمَئِذٍ عَلَيۡهَا غَبَرَةٞ

    Wawujoohun yawmaithin AAalayha ghabaratun

    And [other] faces, that Day, will have upon them dust

  41. 41Verse 41

    تَرۡهَقُهَا قَتَرَةٌ

    Tarhaquha qataratun

    Blackness will cover them

  42. 42Verse 42

    أُوْلَـٰٓئِكَ هُمُ ٱلۡكَفَرَةُ ٱلۡفَجَرَةُ

    Olaika humu alkafaratu alfajaratu

    Those are the disbelievers, the wicked ones
